OptiLIFT
Overview
OptiLIFT dynamic Muscle Stimulation (DMSt) is a cutting-edge technology that delivers a small electrical current to the muscles of the eyelids that control blinking. This stimulation can strengthen the muscles, which can weaken from poor blinking behavior due to increased screen time and natural aging changes. Proper blinking is vital to producing new tears and protecting the eye’s surface, making OptiLIFT a powerful therapeutic option for patients suffering from dry eye and ocular surface disease, as this treatment can improve both blink quality as well as eyelid position and tone by reducing lid laxity or “sagging.”
The muscles in our face and around our eyes start to experience a decrease in mass and strength by about 3-5% every decade after the age of 30. This results in:
- Decent of the lower eyelid
- Laxity of the muscles around the eye
- Diminished cheek fullness
- Appearance of nasolabial folds
Not only does age add to poor lid issues, but living in today’s digital age, we are seeing issues in younger and younger patients.
- Normal Blinking – Average blink rate – 15-20x/minute
- Screen Usage – Average blink rate – 4-5x/minute
- Average screen time for American’s today: 11 hours/day
Digital device use results in a significant decrease in blink rate, thus increasing the symptoms of dry eye.
